Technical assistance for design of energy efficient commercial buildings is provided to builders, developers and owners under this program. The demonstration projects are an effort to operationalise ECBC in commercial buildings. A voluntary code, ECBC is expected to become mandatory for commercial buildings by 2017.
The program, while demonstrating feasibility of EBC across different climatic zones, increasing awareness of ECBC by sharing lessons, and building technical expertise to design and construct ECBC compliant buildings, is also strengthening capacity of institutions like BEE to implement the code. Simultaneously the program is offering an opportunity to analyse possible fiscal incentives that will encourage the building sector to adopt ECBC and. Experience gained from these efforts will
feed into streamlining ECBC implementation once it becomes a mandatory code.
