Energy Conservation Building Code

The code targets building energy efficiency in commercial buildings and was introduced in the year 2007. It coversminimum requirements for building envelope performance as well as for mechanical systems andequipment, including HVAC systems, interior and exterior lighting systems, service hot water,electrical power and motors in order to achieve energy efficiency in different climate zones in India. Currently compliance with the code is voluntary and is expected to become mandatory from 2017.

As per Energy Conservation Act 2001, states have the power to amend thecode to suit local climatic conditions, and building construction practices before implementing it. Several states haveextended the scope of ECBC to residential buildings.
